On June 29th, Plaid had the very first “Paint with Plaid – Paint Party”. I had the honor in filming this live stream. It was different from other live streams I have captured for them. Because you have to get in close and actually see the painting. It’s a learning curve and a work in progress. It was a lot of fun to do, but I didn’t get a chance to paint the painting.
After my disaster known as “Galaxy Deconstructed” picking up a painting again was a little daunting. I was going to go back and watch the live stream but I decided to do it from memory. This could be good or go very wrong. I mean come on, look at Galaxy Deconstructed.
If you want to get the full list of supplies, go to the Plaid Blog – Paint Party post. Also, to watch the live stream and do your own painting go to the Plaid Facebook Page.
I taped off my pot at the bottom of the painting. I decided to do a rim around the top and go all the way across. I was unsure about the geometric design I came up with but I went with it.
I first painted the Calypso Sky and did the gradient effect. It was ok not as much as the painting on the top image. After letting that dry I drew my cactus and filled them in. Then did the depth and dimension with the light and shadows. The black I mixed more water than paint. It turned out way better than I thought.
The one thing I need work on is the needles. I think they came out a bit wide. The dab technique described in the video didn’t work for me. But I blame user error 100%. Then the flowers were last. Using the same technique as the needles but three together.
Lastly was the pot. I love the suggestion Kyra gave in the video to mix the Brushed Gold with black. It showed well with the Brushed Gold and Coral color.
I”m very happy with the way my painting came out. Is it a masterpiece, no but it’s really my first painting and I love how the dimensions came out. It taught me some new techniques that I will use going forward. I had a lot of fun painting. Yes, you can do this in an hour!
Go to the Plaid Blog and Facebook for all the information including how to paint the painting. Below is my painting. If you don’t think you can paint, watch the paint party or join one and have fun. They are designed for everyone from expert to beginner!
