Celebrate the 4th of July

I created something fun for the 4th of July. I’m not one for kitschy patriotic stuff. But I had a cut out of the United States that I needed to do something with. I was going to use it at a Splatter Party at Plaid. But it was clothes and bags. Note Post contains affiliate links to Amazon.

Materials used.

I got the idea to do a flag on the wood cut out. I decided to use chalk paint due to the matte finish.

Step 1. I painted the cut out with the white chalk paint I then let dry

Step 2. After it dried I taped off the blue are and painted with the blue chalk paint I then let dry

Step 3. Tape off the striped. I then painted the stripes with the Imperial Red. Making sure to line up the stripes with the blue. I made the bottom blue line up with the first white stripe then I let dry

Step 4. I needed to put stars on the flag. I had a stencil1 stencil of the US flag. It fit great and I used the white paint to stencil them on. Tip. Make sure you do. Dry brush method. Get paint on the brush and dab it on a paper towel till almost dry. Then dab the brush on the stencil

After this, it still lacked something. I got a pallet background that was the perfect size. I wanted a distressed wood look but didn’t want to paint with chalk paint. Then I remembered the new Pickling wash. Which gives the wood a colored tint. What it did was really bring out the wood grain. You couldn’t see it much unfinished.

Step 5. Apply the Pickling Wash. you paint on the wash. Which is a thin tint. Let it sit for 30 seconds and wipe the excess off. After the pallet was painted the instructions said to apply a minimum of 2 coats. After the second coat, I was happy with the results.

Step 6. Attaching the cut out to the pallet was another issue. I didn’t want to glue it to the wood. I decided to get square Velcro to attach it to the pallet. That way I could take it off if I wanted.

I will say this turned out so well. It surpassed what I envisioned. This was something that is patriotic and fun.
